2017 is an important year for the STEPS Theatre as it lived to celebrate its 20th anniversary and 20th theatrical season with the production of "Ask Joseph" an original play by Slava Stepnov and Roman Freud, translated from Russian by Asya Stepnova. Theatergoers of New York will be presented with a unique drama in which the distinct echo of Chekhov’s "Seagull" is in a peculiar intertwine with the life and artistic career of the Noble Prize winner Joseph Brodsky. Even though the play is based on selected episodes from Brodsky’s biography, this story is not about any particular person. It is rather about those who had the courage to drastically change their lives by abandoning their familiar environment and who ended up on the verge of dramatic cultural and emotional split. Love, mystery, adultery, scandals and spies are just a few of turns and twists of the plot. "Ask Joseph" is an attempt to get a sneak peek into the mystery of human talent...

STEPS Theatre was founded in 1997. Starting with its very first production – Chekhov’s "Seagull", the company has been working with actors of different nationalities and theater schools, producing plays in English, Russian and Spanish. Company’s credits include plays by Luigi Pirandello, George Gordon Byron, Edward Albee, Alexander Vampilov, Julio Cortazar, Alexander Pushkin and others. For the last twenty years STEPS Theatre has been participating in numerous festivals around USA, Canada, Europe, Russia, and continues to travel reaching out to diverse public abroad and to promote the structure and spirit of the "True New York Theatre".
